Purchased this decanter as a birthday gift for a friend who loves high quality whiskeys. The price was higher than I wanted to pay, but I used the free shipping and the item ending up being nicer than I expected. ***8-29-12 update below***DECISION:I've been looking for a nice liquor decanter for a few weeks and this one stood out because of its unique design. I was expecting to spend $30-$50, so the current sale price of $83 made me hesitate a bit. I suppose if you are on a budget and want an entire set of liquor decanters for whiskey, gin, rum, and the like, you may want to keep the individual bottles under $50 each. Though if you're spending that much on high end liquors and special bottles to keep them in, I don't imagine you're terribly worried about your budget. Anyway, it took me several days to settle on this particular product. The other options were either too boring (Ravenscroft products) or looked like something my grandmother would like. My friend isn't the faceted-crystal type, so I settled on this product and am now very happy that I did.SHIPPING:I placed my order on Thursday, March 1st, the seller shipped it on Friday, March 2nd, and UPS delivered it just 2 days later on Monday, March 5th. Mind you, I used the FREE Super-Saver shipping, so I wasn't even expecting it to arrive for at least 7 business days.PACKAGING:The item arrived well-packaged within 3 or 4 boxes. No danger of breakage here. In fact, the smallest inner box was extra sturdy and perfect for just covering with gift-wrapping and presenting to the birthday boy.PRODUCT:The picture might seem a teensy bit misleading to some because it has a colored liquid within it. The actual decanter is completely clear. Those intriguing gradations of color in the product images come from shadows and reflections of the light bouncing off the dark liquid. My recommendation is to use this bottle for holding darker liquors like whiskey or aged rum. Clear liquors won't properly bring out the full beauty of this item.The bottle is very sturdy and a bit heavy. While the body of the decanter is made of glass with a regular thickness, the base is solid and hefty. The weight kind of forces you to pour carefully, so I don't imagine you'll drop it unless you do so intentionally. The stopper is also solid glass, with the exception of only one or two tiny bubbles, however, these little imperfections are only noticeable if you are actively searching for them. There is also a divot or something in the base that I cannot recall the term for. You can see it in the product image, but don't worry, it's supposed to be there.There is a small sticker on the underside of the bottle, which is easily removed. The gummy remains of the adhesive can be taken off by rubbing it with a paper towel coated with rubbing alcohol. Less than a minute of light rubbing and this beautiful decanter is all ready to go.I repackaged the item for gift presentation, but failed to warn the recipient that the item was made of glass and had multiple parts, so my friend dropped the glass stopper on a hardwood floor from a height of 3 or 4 feet. We were all relieved that it didn't crack or chip.ADDITIONS:The recipient had also mentioned needing proper whiskey glasses, so I teamed up with a mutual friend to get it all. The Glencairn Crystal Whiskey Tasting Glass ([...]) seemed like a perfect choice since the style matches this decanter. With this and the set of 6 glasses (available as singles or in sets of 2, 4, and 6), he's all set to share some of his rare Pappy Van Winkle with a few close friends.*****UPDATE Aug 29, 2012 *****It's been 5 months and my friend still loves his decanter, but there's one small unanticipated problem that came up; this decanter does NOT have a sealed stopper. The stopper is made entirely of glass. There is no rubber or cork on it to truly seal the bottle. Unfortunately, this means that avid high-end liquor lovers cannot leave alcohol in this bottle indefinitely. My friend's workaround is to just pour his whiskey into the decanter during parties or special occasions and then afterwards, pour the liquor back into its original container. It's slightly annoying and the whole point of getting the decanter was so he didn't have to deal with Pappy Van Winkle's boring bottle, but it's better than nothing. A couple friends and I are looking into crafting up a rubber or cork stopper to affix to this decanter's glass stopper so that the bottle can be sealed. It's too beautiful not to use all the time. Anyway, due to this problem, I have to change my rating from 5 stars to 4. Bah!

I really do like this decanter, it is a solid glass and I think it will hold up well.Here is the problem, I do not think the name brand makes that big of a difference (as much as this cost, at least) that I would buy this again. Seeing it in person I see that it isn't strangely large, oversized, or especially artful. It is just a very nice decanter. Good enough, I suppose.
