I first saw this Atelier du Vin "Cantatrice" decanter at the Athenaeum in Beaune some time ago and immediately wanted to bring one home. The practical impediments to toting a large glass object like this on a plane held me back, the cost of shipping and risk of breakage were too daunting, and I looked for some time for an opportunity to buy one here in the States.Well, here it is at last. This is the largest size "Cantatrice" offered - there is a smaller model that holds about a liter and will really comfortably hold no more than a 750 ml bottle. As shown here, it is an angled flask form with voluptuous curves and a slanted neck. There is a beautiful accessory that fits this decanter perfectly - a "decanting mirror" made of polished stainless steel, also part of the Atelier du Vin collection of wine and food accessories. The mirror is a sweeping curve of metal with a funnel-like shape. You pour wine onto the upper surface of the mirror and it flows down to the truncated tail of the mirror, directing the wine down along the inner wall of the Cantatrice, aerating the wine and making a really beautiful presentation. The open polished stainless curve displays the color of the wine perfectly and when you begin to reach the fine lees near the bottom of the bottle, you will know immediately. It functions somewhat like the old polished silver tastevin to reveal the clarity and color of your wine. The "mirror" does not come with the decanter sold here, but you can find it for sale on its own here on amazon (just search "decanting mirror" and you will see it on offer, with a picture of it in use with this decanter), as well as at many of the usual wine accessory shops online. And if you do get to the Athenaeum, you could pick one up there - it weighs next to nothing and will readily fit in your carry-on!This model easily holds a magnum. A fifth comes about one-third up the broad base and therefore you get a lot of surface area exposed to the air. A magnum fills the broad bowl at the base and does not come up into the neck - perfect. It is a heavy object, but nicely balanced, and the narrow waist at the base of the neck provides a firm grip.For what it's worth, this is also a great deal. If you bought it in Beaune, you would pay more than amazon's price and still have to figure out how to get it home! (You may notice that like many items offered on amazon nowadays, the price will fluctuate, so don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes, so to speak).I have many decanters, most rather utilitarian, a few more luxurious. This decanter is extremely functional, beautiful and not too delicate for daily use. With the added bonus of the matching decanting mirror, it really makes opening and aerating a bottle of wine with dinner into a lovely ritual.
